1937

Marine welding engineer, Lambertus van Ouwerkerk, founded his firm, the non-destructive testing (NDT) specialist RTD, in 1937. He built a successful business by realizing that X-ray inspection techniques could be utilized in order to check welds on ship hulls.

Van Ouwerkerk believed that NDT would play a crucial role in the use of welding techniques as a replacement for traditional riveting in steel construction.

1960

The discovery of gas in the Netherlands in the 1960s was the cue for the next significant rise in activity for RTD, as thousands of kilometres of gas pipeline were laid across the north of the country. Key steps towards the world of energy and oil and gas.

RTD's extensive knowledge and proven use of NDT techniques became hugely important to the development of the national gas network, as it performed detailed inspections of welds and other parts of the new infrastructure. This work provided the foundation for the recognition of the premier position held by Applus+ RTD today in the global pipeline sector.

1973

Röntgen Technischer Dienst GmbH (RTD) was founded in West Germany in February 1973 as an independent subsidiary of the Dutch company Röntgen Technische Dienst B.V. The company quickly made a name for itself and became established in the non-destructive material testing and inspection market.

From the outset, RTD specialized in X-ray testing. Within ten years, it had already made significant contributions to the development of the field. RTD worked constantly to expand its range of conventional testing techniques. This resulted in new developments in the field of ultrasonic testing that continue to lead the way in the market today.
