Radiation protection services

Applus RTD's radiation protection department provides inspection, advice and support services regarding issues such as handling radioactive substances and radiation contamination.

Increasingly complex legislation for radiation protection has exerted additional pressure on international industry, from the handling of radioactive materials and mitigation of radioactive contamination, to the disposal and recycling of technologies such as ionizing smoke detectors.

Every possible radiation protection challenge is guided by the need for companies to ensure legislative compliance at every stage of an operation involving exposure to radiation, through appropriate permit application and authority notification procedures.

Applus RTD Radiation Protection has over 50 years of experience in radiation protection and decommissioning. Backed by the NDT and Inspection experience of the wider Applus RTD group, we have the capability to deploy extensive knowledge and technical methodology across the radiation and radioactivity spectrum, in any location for clients, worldwide.

We deliver solutions for companies and contractors having contact with radioactivity and radiation contamination, including using X-ray equipment in any way, or responsibility for the handling and disposal of scrap materials or other hazardous objects such as ionization smoke detectors.

Our level three radiation specialists are ideally suited to deliver onsite advice, consultancy and support, to assess risk during radiation incidents and to assess problems through identification of radioactive materials and their concentration through sample analysis in our radionuclide laboratory (C-laboratory).

Applus RTD also takes care of the cleaning and upgrading of Electron Capture Detectors (ECDs) and the cleaning of contaminated sources and equipment. Temporary storage facilities for radioactive materials are also available.

In operation, and working together with the client, action plans, risk analyses and study projects can also be delivered together with advice on obtaining licenses and permits, as well as purchasing, implementing, commissioning, decommissioning, and transporting radioactive materials.

Applus RTD can:

  • Work with artificial and natural radioactivity
  • Test for leakage of radioactive sources
  • Inspect radioactive sources and X-ray equipment
  • Carry out radioactivity measurements of samples
  • Supply dose and dose rate measurements personnel
  • Deliver risk analysis / assessments of radiation applications RI&E
  • Support permit applications for radioactive sources and X-ray equipment
  • Advise and coordinate large projects with ionizing radiation f.i. on NDT or NORM
  • Remove and recycle ionization smoke detectors
